Moving to the UK with a Skilled Worker Visa: What You Need to Know
If you’ve received a job offer from a UK employer, the Skilled Worker visa could be your ticket to living and working in the United Kingdom. Introduced as a replacement for the old Tier 2 (General) route, this visa lets overseas professionals take up approved roles with UK sponsors while paving the way to permanent settlement.
What Is the Skilled Worker Visa?
The visa is designed for people who want to work for a licensed sponsor in a role that meets the government’s skill and salary requirements. It’s popular with professionals in engineering, IT, healthcare, finance, and many other sectors where UK employers need skilled staff.
Who Can Apply?
You can apply if you have:
- A confirmed job offer from a UK company that holds a valid sponsor licence.
- A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) that includes details of your position and salary.
- A role that meets the required skill level (RQF level 3 or above).
- A salary that meets or exceeds the current minimum threshold, which is the higher of £38,700 or the “going rate” for your occupation.
- Proof of English‑language ability and sufficient funds to support yourself when arriving in the UK (unless your employer agrees to maintain you).
The Application Process
Everything starts online. We will submit your visa application through the UK government website, upload documents, and pay the necessary fees — including the Immigration Health Surcharge for access to the NHS.
You may also need to attend a biometric appointment at a visa center or verify your identity through the UK Immigration ID Check app. Once approved, you’ll receive an entry visa (vignette) to travel.
Arrival and Next Steps
After arriving in the UK, you’ll collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) if you were issued one. You can then begin working for your sponsoring employer and, if you wish, explore switching employers later — as long as the new company is also licensed and issues you a new CoS.
How Long It Lasts and What Comes Next
A Skilled Worker visa can be granted for up to five years at a time.
You can extend it or eventually apply for indefinite leave to remain (permanent residence) after five years of continuous work in the UK.
Bringing Your Family
Your partner and children may apply to join you as dependants if they meet the eligibility requirements. They’ll be allowed to live, study, and work in the UK for the duration of your visa.
Final Thoughts
The Skilled Worker route continues to be the main pathway for international professionals relocating to the UK. With the right job offer and preparation, it offers a clear structure for long‑term career opportunities — and even permanent settlement — in the UK.
