The UK Ancestry Visa: A Pathway for Commonwealth Nationals with British Roots
If you have a grandparent who was born in the United Kingdom, you may be eligible to live and work in Britain under the UK Ancestry visa. This visa gives Commonwealth citizens a route to move to the UK for employment and, eventually, permanent residence.
Who Can Apply
To qualify, applicants generally must:
- Be a Commonwealth citizen, including those from countries like Canada, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand.
- Be aged 17 or over.
- Have at least one grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. Births in the Republic of Ireland before 31 March 1922 may also count.
- Plan to work or seek employment in the UK.
- Be able to support themselves and any dependants financially without public funds.
You typically apply from outside the UK and will need to present evidence of your ancestry connection, such as birth certificates linking you to your UK‑born grandparent.
How to Apply
- Complete the online application form before travelling to the UK.
- Upload your supporting documents, including proof of ancestry, planned work or job prospects, and financial stability.
- Pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- Attend a biometric appointment at a visa application centre.
Decisions usually take several weeks, and once approved, you’ll get a vignette (visa stamp) that allows you to enter the UK within a set timeframe.
Life in the UK on an Ancestry Visa
The Ancestry visa allows unrestricted work and self‑employment, making it one of the most flexible work routes. It’s valid for five years, after which you can apply to extend your stay or qualify for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) if you meet the residence requirements.
Family Members
Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply to join you as dependants. They’ll have the same right to live, study, and work in the UK for as long as your visa is valid.
