Angelina Jolie was thanked for ”doing incredible things” at the Woman in the World summit on 8 March 2012.
The 36-year-old actress – who is a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador – spoke about the plight of Somali refugees at the event at the Lincoln Centre in New York and was introduced by Rwandan genocide survivor Sandra Uwiringiyimana.
Sandra thanked Angelina for ”taking justice into her home and hands and doing incredible things,” with the actress appearing visibly moved by the touching introduction.
Angelina then went on to tell the story of Dr. Hawa Abdi, who runs a medical camp in Somalia which is now being overrun by militants. Angelina has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her exceptional work.
She said the story ”illuminates the nightmare of tens of millions around the world the internally displaced and the ones homeless within their homelands. It is, right now, Friday morning in Somalia. In a few hours, 400 human beings are about to become, once again, displaced.”
Other speakers at the three-day summit include politician Hillary Clinton and actress Meryl Streep.

Immigrants who fail to learn English “like a native” risk becoming part of an unemployable “sub-class”, says communities secretary Eric Pickles.
Pickles, who recently published a new strategy on integration, said language skills were vital, and promised £10m to encourage teaching.
“In terms of wanting people, encouraging people, to be part of British society, they can’t do that unless they have more than an understanding of English,” he told The House magazine.
“If we don’t get our resident population with an understanding of English, then they become a sub-class that is virtually unemployable, or are stuck in a ghetto. We should not be turning people out of our schools who aren’t able to speak English like a native.”
Shadow communities secretary Hilary Benn criticised Pickles’s choice of words.”Eric Pickles should be thinking of practical ways to ensure that anyone settling in this country is able to speak English rather than talking about sub-classes and ghettos,” he said.
Eric Jack Pickles (born 20 April 1952) is a British Conservative Party politician. Pickles was appointed Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government of the coalition government headed by Prime Minister David Cameron on 12 May 2010.
He was the Chairman of the Conservative Party until being replaced by Baroness Warsi in May 2010 and has been Member of Parliament for Brentwood and Ongar in Essex since 1992. He was Co-Chairman of the Joint Committee Against Racism between 1982 and 1987.

Greece establishes new asylum and reception services
The UN agency for refugees has welcomed the establishment of three new asylum services in Greece that are part of Greece’s National Action Plan on Migration Management and Asylum Reform.: the Initial Reception Service, the Asylum Service and the Appeals Authority.
According to the Greek government, the objective of the Initial Reception Service is to provide reception services to third country nationals who are arrested due to illegal entry or stay in Greece, under conditions that guarantee human dignity and their rights, in accordance with the international obligations of the country. These reception services, in addition to ensuring the immediate vital needs of the third country nationals, includes identification, registration, medical screening and socio-psychological support, provision of information on their rights and obligations, and the referral of vulnerable persons such as unaccompanied children and victims of torture.
Panagiotis Nikas, Director of the Initial Reception Service announced the construction of the first screening centres in the Evros region. According to the Ministry of Citizen Protection, there will be cooperation with FRONTEX and the EASO in the centres of first screening.
The Asylum Service will be in charge of receiving asylum seekers and examining and deciding on their cases. Director of the Asylum Service Maria Stavropoulou appealed to interested civil servants to join the Asylum Service and to the international and European organisations and NGOs to support this effort of “national importance”.
Furthermore, the Appeals Authority noted that the goal is to overcome the shortcomings of the past which has resulted in a series of condemnations for human rights violations and criticism from both the domestic and the international community.
UNHCR’s Representative for South Europe, Laurent Jolles, stated that this is a positive step in the right direction. Jolles added that, “UNHCR fully supports the effort while we do not underestimate the enormous challenges.”

A Hertfordshire man has been sentenced to 2 years and 8 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to 37 charges of possessing and importing indecent images of children. It follows a joint investigation by our officers and Hertfordshire Constabulary.
Graham Benjamin Phillips, of Railway Terrace, Kings Langley, had been stopped by our officers at Dover’s Eastern Docks on 26 June 2011. When questioned he said he was an accountant and had been to Lille for 4 days to get away from the stresses of work.
Officers searched the vehicle he was driving and found a laptop, 2 mobile phones and memory sticks and cards. When asked to unlock the laptop to allow officers to check the material stored on it, Phillips refused saying it contained confidential work material.
The laptop, phones and memory sticks and cards were detained pending further investigation by us. The laptop was found to contain a large number of indecent images of children up to the level 5 on the COPINE scale.
On September 8, 2011, our officers and Hertfordshire Constabulary carried out an arrest enquiry at an address in Kings Langley. Phillips was not at the address and was subsequently listed as wanted by Hertfordshire Constabulary and an appeal to trace him placed on Crimewatch.
Officers in Hertfordshire received information on his whereabouts and arrested Graham Phillips at a football match in the county on 5 November.
Following his arrest, Hertfordshire Constabulary identified other possible offences and investigated these. He was subsequently charged with 37 offences in total.
